Helicopter crash: Indian Army Commander-in-Chief Bipin Rawat and his wife dies

Bipin Rawat India's army chief and his wife have been killed in a helicopter crash. The helicopter crashed in the Nilgiris hills of Tamil Nadu around 12:30 pm local time on Wednesday. Indian media NDTV reported this.

Among the passengers on the crashed helicopter were Bipin Rawat his wife Madhulika a few staff members including his defense assistant security commandos and Air Force officials. Thirteen of the 14 people aboard the helicopter were killed. One of the injured is undergoing treatment for serious burns.

The Indian Air Force said on Twitter that General Bipin Rawat his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others were killed in the crash.

The Air Force said the helicopter crashed in the Nilgiris hills of Tamil Nadu around 12:30 pm local time on Wednesday. An Air Force helicopter including General Bipin Rawat, crashed near Kunur in Tamil Nadu, according to an Air Force tweet. An inquiry has been ordered into the cause of the accident.

In January 2019 General Rawat became India's first defense chief. This term was created to unify the army navy and air force.  He had earlier served as India's army chief.

Chief of Defense Staff Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of India and Chief Adviser to the Ministry of Defense. He was also appointed head of the newly created Department of Military Affairs.

Bipin Rawat joined the army in 1978 as a second lieutenant. For four decades, he served in the forces of Jammu and Kashmir and the de facto Line of Control on the Chinese border.  Source: NDTV
